Va. Hospital Adding Security After Fatal Stabbing

Local police will patrol the hospital's parking lot as part of the announcement.

Hospital officials in east Virginia are adding security measures to their campus after someone was stabbed to death in the parking lot Monday.

The upgraded security at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital will include officer escorts for employees walking to their cars, according to wavy.com.

Sheriff’s deputies will also patrol the parking lot during shift employee changes.

Riverside Shore was placed on lockdown Monday morning after police say Winston Burton, 58, stabbed 42-year-old hospital employee Shelli Crockett multiple times around 7:30 a.m. Burton is Crockett’s estranged ex-boyfriend.

When police arrived Crockett was being treated by hospital staff, but she was later declared dead.

Burton is being charged with first degree murder and has a preliminary trial set for January 11.

Hospital officials lifted the lockdown around 1 p.m.

Counselors will also be available for employees as part of Riverside Shore’s employee assistance program.
