The Utah System of Higher Education (USHE), which includes the state’s eight public colleges and universities, is requesting an increase of $2.1 million in funding to upgrade hardware defense systems against hackers and to hire IT staff.
The funding would also cover the cost of a USHE chief information security officer and an external security team to provide oversight at all campuses, the Herald Journal reports.
Currently, USHE’s IT staff scan every email address that is connected to the USU network once a week to look for security vulnerabilities. Three full-time USU employees devoted to cybersecurity make make a total of $165,000 in salaries.
