PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) will be upgrading its security. The improvements are in response to the March 8 shooting at the facility’s psychiatric clinic that left two people dead and seven injured.
At least one armed officer will be on patrol at all times at the Allegheny County hospitals and UPMC Hamot in Erie, reports the Associated Press. Walk-through metal detectors will be installed in the emergency departments, and security officers will conduct bag checks at those hospitals.
At the psychiatric clinic where the shooting occurred, card access control will be installed at the employee entrance. Also, the University of Pittsburgh will hire 20 more police officers who will be armed with Tasers. They will patrol UPMC’s medical facilities.
