SAN ANTONIO – Officials at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) plan to reinstate a campus police officer who shot and killed an unarmed student in December.
On Dec. 6, Cpl. Chris Carter pulled over Robert Cameron Redus, 23, for allegedly speeding and driving erratically. The stop was off campus.
Carter claimed Redus became combative, which led to a physical confrontation. The officer fired six shots, hitting Redus five times at close range, opposingviews.com reports.
Investigators say audio, which was recorded from Carter’s lapel-mic, supports the officer’s story.
UIW will reinstate Carter to an administrative position if he isn’t indicted for the shooting, according to school officials.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father, Mickey Redus, wrote an open letter to UIW asking why the school refuses to change campus police policies and procedures.
Doug Endsley, UIW’s vice president of business and finance, said that any changes to recruiting officers were already being discussed before the incident.
