WISE, Va. – The University of Virginia at Wise has named it new police chief for its campus police department.
Ronnie Shortt will succeed Steve McCoy, who recently retired. Shortt has more than 20 years of police experience and has served with the UVa-Wise police department since 1992, Times News reports.
When he began working at UVa-Wise, Shortt worked as a campus patrolman. After that, he served as coordinator of parking enforcement and special events. For the past three years, he has served a sergeant of the campus police force.
Shortt said he does not expect any major changes in the way his nine-person department operates because McCoy left the police department in great shape before his retirement.
The new chief plans to continue campus safety training efforts and to work closely with law enforcement in the surrounding area.
