University Fined $82K For Improper Handling of Sex Crimes

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University has been fined $82,500 by the U.S. Education Department for improperly reporting and handling two sexual assaults in 2007.

The department has acknowledged improvements in the university’s crime reporting, but said the changes do not diminish the seriousness of the 2007 attacks, USA today reports. A spokesman said the university will appeal the fines.

This year, several other schools have been found in violation of the Clery Act.
