The University of Maine System agreed to settle a former athletic director’s lawsuit for $30,000 on Aug 9.
University officials were accused of negligence and of violating their own policies when they terminated Athletic Director Warren Newton in May of 2015.
Newton, who had worked at the system’s Augusta campus since 2001, agreed to drop all claims as part of the settlement, reports the Portland Press Herald.
University officials fired Newton after investigating allegations that he was in a relationship with a student. Newton claimed his due process rights were violated during that investigation because he wasn’t able to adequately defend himself. Newton also argued that the investigation turned up no evidence that he’d violated university policies.

Newton was eventually fired on grounds of “untruthfulness and deception.” He was making an annual salary of $88,000 plus benefits at the time of his termination.
The university system admitted no wrongdoing and Newton will not be allowed to seek a job with the system or its affiliates as part of the settlement.
The university will also cover Newton’s attorney costs.
