IOWA CITY, Iowa — Officials from the University of Iowa responded to a recent investigation conducted by Sports Illustrated and CBS News that found the university’s football team to be among the nation’s leaders in players with police records.
The football team has 18 players with police records, the second highest number of the 25 teams surveyed during the investigation, the Globe Gazette reports. University officials pointed out that the infractions were all misdemeanors.
Fifteen of the players have alcohol-related offenses; two others were charged with possession of a controlled substance. Star defensive end Adrian Clayborn pleaded guilty to disorderly contact after allegedly punching a cab driver.
Coach Kirk Ferentz said that he has dealt with violations of the student-athlete code of conduct promptly and firmly.
