RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Officials at the University of California, Riverside have called the Business Insider’s “The 25 Most Dangerous Colleges in America” article, “intentionally inflammatory” and that research for the story was “inaccurate.”
UC Riverside ranked No. 24 on the list, which was released Nov. 20, while another UC college, UCLA, ranked No. 1. UC Riverside representative Kris Lovekin noted that the Business Insider report suggests that it compares all universities, when in fact the article only targets large universities with police departments, The Press-Enterprise reports.
Furthermore, Lovekin said that although Business Insider used the FBI’s Unified Crime Report for its data, it failed to use the federally-mandated Clery Act reports on campus safety. She also mentioned that universities with their own campus police departments bring more active crime reporting and dealing with safety issues on campus.
In a statement, the Business Insider said, “As you can see, this is a controversial list, but we think it offers a useful perspective on crime on and around campuses.”
