BERKELEY, Calif. — UC Berkeley police shot a man who brought a handgun into a business school computer lab on Nov. 15. The man, who was an undergraduate student at the university, was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he died hours later.
Police said there was nothing connecting Christopher Nathen Elliot Travis, 32, to the Occupy Cal march that took place a few hours after the shooting, the Oakland Tribune reports. Travis entered the business school and got into an elevator. As the elevator ascended, a business school employee in the same elevator noticed him pull a handgun from his backpack and place it back inside.
When police arrived at the scene, they cornered Travis in a third-floor computer lab. He pulled out the gun and “displayed it in a threatening manner.” When he refused to drop the weapon, an officer fired multiple shots.
Grief couselors were brought to the campus Wednesday, the Associated Press reports. It was the first on-campus shooting since 1992.
