The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is investigating the University of Michigan (UM) and Michigan State on how they have handled sexual abuse complaints.

UM is being investigated for its handling of a student’s report that she was raped by a football player in 2009. The player was expelled in December for violating the school’s sexual assault policy.

Additionally, federal investigators are investigating three sexual abuse claims at Michigan State, reports the Detroit News.

UM and Michigan State are among a growing number of U.S. institutions being investigated by OCR for alleged non-compliance with Title IX and the Clery Act.The rise in the number of OCR investigations may have also prompted the University of Wisconsin-Madison to consider establishing new procedures for investigating sexual assault on campus. The school’s division of student life proposed new procedures on Tuesday, reports the Daily Cardinal.
