NEW YORK — Research universities nationwide are tightening security and constricting their culture of openness as numerous campuses are being subjected to millions of cyber-attacks on a weekly basis.
Some hacking attempts, most likely from China, have succeeded, and have involved the theft of personal data, such as Social Security numbers, the New York Times reports. Many university officials acknowledged that they did not learn of the attacks until much later after they happened.
Some universities are no longer allowing staff members to take laptops to certain countries to get a handle on the attacks.
