U.S. Department of Ed. Releases Anti-Bullying Policymaking Guidelines

The U.S. Department of Education has released a summary of the key components of anti-bullying laws, in response to requests from local officers and educators. The document is intended to assist states and school officials looking to develop anti-bullying legislation or policies.

The document makes references to current state laws regarding anti-bullying and is organized into 11 components. The key components necessary to creating well-formed anti-bullying legislation or policies are identified by the department as:

  • Specification of Prohibited Conduct
  • Enumeration of Specific Characteristics
  • Development and Implementation of Local Educational Agencies (LEA) Policies
  • Components of LEA Policies
  • Review of Local Policies
  • Communication Plan

  • Transparency and Monitoring
  • Statement of Rights to Other Legal Recourse
