U of Ore. Granted Permission to Form Sworn Police Force

OREGON — The State Board of Higher Education voted on Friday to allow the University of Oregon to convert its public safety officers into a sworn police force.

The new police department will be phased in over six years, The Oregonian reports. However, the university will have to come back for approval before arming its police.

The state’s other six campuses have expressed no interest in establishing their own police forces.
