U. of Maryland Expands Code of Student Conduct to Cover Off-Campus Violations

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Md. — With the expansion of its Code of Student Conduct, the University of Maryland will be able to prosecute students for off-campus violations.

In addition to pressing criminal charges, university police, along with Prince George’s County Police, will be able to refer students to the Office of Student Conduct, The Diamondback reports.

School officials maintain that the policy change is not a penalty, but an enhancement, as it will teach students to treat the city with the same respect they have for the university. Although some students have voiced concerns over the changes, officials said that the student conduct office would not target students with minor infractions. Rather, the office will focus on extreme issues, such as noise complaints, drug and alcohol distribution, hazing, sexual assault and criminal activity off campus.
