LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky will spend nearly $5 million to deploy a campus security system that will include 2,000 surveillance cameras.
The system, which will be installed by Next Level Security Systems, will feature video analytics software that detects unexpected movement and then sends an automatic alarm to a dispatch center, Lexington Herald-Leader reports.
The decision to install the security solution has raised concern among the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), with members stating that information taken for the surveillance cameras could be misused.
Additionally, the security solution will include 26 new “Blue Phone” locations with video cameras and early-warning speakers for crises, which will amplify the university’s alert system of E-mail, text and phone messages,
Other elements of the system include student ID cards that track when students enter buildings after hours.
