NEWARK, Del. — The University of Delaware is seeking to extend the jurisdiction of its sworn police force to include the four fraternities and one sorority located on private property outside campus. University officials believe campus police are better equipped to handle minor infractions such as underage drinking and disorderly conduct than the Newark police.
However, city council members are concerned that university police would be less accountable to nonstudent residents living near Greek houses, The News Journal reports. If student violations were to be handled internally while UD police punished nonstudents criminally, that could be a violation of the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause.
Newark Mayor Vance A Funk III has suggested joint patrols to add manpower on weekends when Greek parties usually occur.
