U. of Chicago to Launch Safety Mobile App

CHICAGO — With the goal of increasing the University of Chicago Police Department’s (UCPD) ability to monitor students and patrol the campus, the department, along with the school’s student government, plan to launch a smartphone app called Pathlight.

Developed by CBORD Group, the Pathlight app allows students to opt into GPS tracking services for their phones, The Chicago Maroon reports. In the event that a student is walking across campus alone at night, he/she can launch the “Follow Me Now” feature, allowing UCPD to remotely track the student’s presence until the walk is completed.

Additionally, the app allows users to silently alert UCPD dispatchers in the event of an emergency.
