Tuskegee University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Alabama, has initiated a multi-year project to implement a fully integrated security system across its campus. The university is partnering with Honeywell to deploy AI-enabled technology and smart access controls to enhance the safety of its students, faculty, and staff.

The upgrades will centralize the university’s access control and introduce real-time monitoring tools, which are intended to improve incident response times and simplify security operations, according to a press release. This move comes as educational institutions across the country face increasing pressure to adopt new technologies to bolster campus security.

A key component of the upgrade is LenelS2’s OnGuard access control system, which will act as the central platform for managing and monitoring campus-wide access. This system will provide control over sensors and door locks, enabling administrators to secure buildings and restrict unauthorized entry. LenelS2 was acquired by Honeywell in 2024 and is now part of its Building Automation portfolio.

The university will also install a wireless locking system for its dormitories. Students will use mobile credentials on a smartphone or watch to access their rooms, replacing traditional plastic key cards. Once inside, students will have the ability to digitally lock their dorm room door.

Additionally, the project includes the deployment of more than 1,500 security cameras by early 2026. These cameras will be integrated with AI-enabled video monitoring software designed to provide real-time anomaly detection and improve situational awareness for security personnel.

Honeywell and Tuskegee University Commit to Campus Safety

Jeff Stanek, president of Security and Access Solutions for Honeywell Building Automation, stated that the company is proud to help Tuskegee create a safer environment. “Together, we’re helping deliver an adaptive system including AI-enabled technology that helps give campus leaders the confidence and control to meet evolving security demands,” Stanek said.

Dr. Mark A. Brown, President and CEO of Tuskegee University, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the university’s “Students First” focus. “Supporting this is our partnership with Honeywell, which helped us transform the campus experience by integrating state-of-the-art technology to support ongoing enhancements for our students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Brown. He added that the project supports the university’s broader plans to modernize the campus.
