TOWSON, Md. — A new group on the Towson University campus — known as the White Student Union — has started conducting security patrols around the site.
Although not officially recognized by the university, the group, which boasts more than 50 members, encourages its members to “stand up for white identity” and promotes “public policy that benefits white students,” ABC2News.com reports. Matthew Heimback, president of the organization, says he started the patrol because of the high crime rate in the area that he attributes to ‘black on white crime.”
Members of the patrol unit of the White Student Union, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has classified as a hate group, have had firearms training and patrolling members will carry pepper spray. University officials issued a letter stating that it does not encourage the general public to take the law into their own hands.
Heimbach says he has received death threats after the campus community learned of the patrols. Campus police have amped up visibility on campus although it is unclear whether that is in direct response to the White Student Union’s recent actions.
