TORONTO – Dineshkumar Murugiah, 16, was stabbed on a sidewalk near his high school, Winston Churchill Collegiate, Sept. 11, according to news reports.
Police state that Murugiah and his friends were leaving campus for lunch when the suspect approached him. A physical confrontation ensued, resulting in Murugiah being stabbed in the stomach several times. The suspect fled the scene immediately, escaping into the passenger side of a light-blue ’92 or ’94 Honda Civic.
Police report that the stabbing took place at 12:05 pm. When the ambulance arrived at the scene, Murugiah showed no vital signs. Shortly after arriving at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, he died.
While the motive is still unclear, authorities believe that Murugiah was the intended target. The victim had recently transferred to Winston Churchill Collegiate because of disciplinary problems he experienced at another school.
This incident marks the 57th murder of 2007 in Toronto.
