SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – Students participating in all extracurricular activities at Bedford County schools will now be subject to random drug testing.
The Bedford County Board of Education passed the drug testing policy on March 23. It standardizes policies throughout the district and expands the program beyond athletics to clubs, cheerleading and band, as well as other voluntary activities.
Mothers and fathers will receive notification of the policy change when they complete the parental permission form that is required whenever a student joins a club or team. Students will be randomly screened for amphetamines, methamphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and even performance-enhancing drugs in some cases.
