JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri State Teachers Association will challenge a new law that restricts teachers’ use of social networking Web sites and their contact with students via those sites.
The union is seeking an injunction to block enforcement of the law, which takes effect August 28, the Huffington Post reports. The union and several public school teachers said the law violates educators’ constitutional rights to free speech, association and religion.
Under the law, districts must establish policies that outline appropriate use of electronic media by January. Teachers are barred from having “exclusive access” online with current students or former students who are minors.
