Teacher Miscarries After Breaking Up Classroom Fight

NEW YORK — A Spanish teacher from Explorations Academy suffered a miscarriage on Dec. 8 after she broke up a fight between two students. Lissedia Batista, 27, was elbowed in the stomach by a 15-year-old student who was arguing with his classmate over a desk chair.

Batista was four months pregnant when she attempted to intervene in a fight between students that had become physical. The two students – a freshman and sophomore – have since been suspended, ABC News reports. Batista is not expected to press charges.

Kristin Swanson, dean of the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told the news source that it is possible that Batista’s miscarriage was not related to the fight. The incident, however, draws attention to classroom violence and the risks teachers face everyday.
