Tarleton State University has been fined $137,500 by the U.S. Education Department for failing to accurately report crime statistics.

The university was accused of underreporting the number of sexual assaults, burglaries and drug-related crimes on and near the campus between 2002-2007, according to The Houston Chronicle.

According to University spokeswoman Liza Benedict, the fine outweighed the violation and the university plans to appeal the decision.

The U.S. Education Department has the authority to fine a university up to $27,500 for each violation, in accordance with the Clery Act.
