CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The family of a Virginia Quarterly Review managing editor who committed suicide has filed a lawsuit against the University of Virginia claiming that officials created a hostile work environment.
Kevin Morrissey, 52, fatally shot himself on July 30, 2010, the Associated Press reports. The suit alleges that Morrissey clashed with the journal’s former editor Ted Genoways, and that he tried to contact university officials about the issues prior to his death.
After Morrissey’s death, a university audit found that Genoways failed to follow several institutional procedures and had difficulties with certain employees, but none “seemed to rise to the level of a serious, ongoing concern.”
