Campus administrators, safety, security, and law enforcement professionals see firsthand the impact alcohol and drugs have on the way they do their jobs. It may feel like prevention efforts fall on the shoulders of one person or department, but the key to effective substance misuse prevention involves multiple stakeholders joining forces and creating a comprehensive plan.
A recent survey found substance use among college-aged adults is shifting from alcohol to marijuana and hallucinogens. In 2020, 44% of college students reported using marijuana in the past year and 9% reported using hallucinogens. On the contrary, there was a substantial drop in alcohol use among college students and binge drinking also saw a significant decline. Drug and alcohol trends continuously change over time and it is the job of campus safety professionals to stay abreast of those changes and plan accordingly.
Next week, Campus Safety will host three GroupProjects on the topic of substance misuse prevention programs. GroupProjects are interactive webinars that allow attendees to video chat directly with the presenter and other public safety professionals to create an open dialogue regarding various safety and security issues affecting K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, and healthcare facilities.
This month’s GroupProject will explore how to build the prevention capacity of partners across campus and help to ensure that prevention efforts are both successful and sustainable. Participants will explore the foundation of campus substance misuse prevention and highlight the importance of including environmental prevention strategies as part of a comprehensive prevention approach.
