SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — Nearly one in 10 youths report coercing or forcing sexual contact upon another, according to a new national report.
The study, published in the American Medical Association journal JAMA Pediatrics, surveyed more than 1,000 young people aged 14 to 21. Survey results revealed that 9% of young people admitted to some kind of forced sexual contact, using guilt, threats or actual physical force. Half blamed their victims. Four percent admitted to having raped someone else, NBC News reports.
Of those who tried or completed rape said they didn’t use physical force. Roughly 63% of those respondents said they used guilt as their main tactic, while 32% used arguments and other verbal pressure.
Research also indicated that problem behavior typically begins around age 16.
