CHICAGO — A study has found that noise levels in hospital rooms may sometimes spike to nearly that of a chainsaw.
The study, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at 100 patients in the University of Chicago medical center, Reuters reports. Noise levels were lower at night than during the day, but almost always exceeded recommendations for average and maximum noise level.
Noise in hospital rooms should not exceed 30 to 40 decibels, according to the World Health Organization. However, the average noise level in patient rooms was close to 50 decibels and at times reached 80 decibels — almost as loud as a chainsaw.
