A seven-year study of teens conducted in England indicates that half of gay, bisexual and lesbian middle school students were bullied, but that percentage dropped to 9% for boys and 6% for girls by the time they were 19 and 20 years old.
The decrease in harassment is in large part due to the maturity of victims’ peers. Researchers, however, also believe the change is partially the result of society’s greater acceptance of gays, bisexuals and lesbians; the permitting of same-sex marriage; as well as the growing intolerance of bullying.
Results of the study appear in Pediatrics.
