Study: 1 in 6 Sex Offenders Alters Their Identity

Almost one in six sex offenders is using techniques invented by identity thieves to avoid legally mandated registration requirements, according to a new study.

Approximately 92,000 of the 570,000 registered sex offenders across the country are systematically manipulating their names, birthdays, Social Security numbers and other personal identifiers, NBC News reports. Across the country, an average of 16.2% of sex offenders manipulate their identities — but in states such as Louisiana, Washington, D.C., Nevada, Tennessee and Delaware, that rate was higher than 25%.

The study was conducted by Utica College and funded by the U.S. Justice Department.
