SAN JOSE, Calif. – The family of a San Jose State University student who committed suicide in his campus dorm room is suing the college for negligence.

On Feb. 9, campus police confronted Brenden Tiggs, 19, who was drunk and upset. When they returned the student to his dorm, they advised him to seek mental health care; however they did not encourage him to see a mental health specialist at the time, NBC Bay Area reports.

Later that day, Tiggs killed himself.

Tiggs’ family is suing the university on behalf of the SJSU police, claiming that officers should have done more to help the student. The lawsuit alleges that school officials did not check on the teen after police approached him.
