BERKELEY, Calif. — As many as nine students have accused the University of California, Berkeley of violating federal regulations when handling sexual assault cases.
The alleged victims filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education on May 22, claiming that university officials discouraged sexual assault victims to report the incidents to local authorities. Additionally, the complaint states that officials failed to notify the campus community of immediate threats to their health and safety and continually under-reporting sexual battery, sexual assault and rape, the Daily Californian reports.
The students filed complaints under the Clery Act in coordination with students from Swarthmore College, Dartmouth College and the University of California. If UC Berkeley is found to be in violation of the allegations, the school could be fined $35,000 for every offense.
