LAFAYETTE, Ind.—Ivy Tech Community College will start a student patrol unit comprised of criminal justice students.
Ten students will be hired and undergo 20 hours of training before the program begins in August, reports jconline.com. The unit is meant to help increase safety during a time when enrollment is at an all-time high.
Ivy Tech currently employs an off-duty Lafayette Police Department officer and private officer for security. Because of budget issues, additional police officers or security guards could not be hired.
Student patrol members will perform routine building checks, write parking and smoking violations and be walking escorts. The members will contact on-duty officers when there are crimes and other violations on campus.
