Police Pepper Spray Students During Food Fight

Published: May 15, 2011

Pepper spray was used to end two incidents related to student misconduct over the past week. Police dispersed a crowd of students outside Ohio State University (OSU) on May 14; two OSU students were arrested during the incident. On May 12, campus security at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella, Calif., used pepper spray to break up a food fight.

Parents of Bobby Duke Middle School students have expressed concern over the use of pepper spray during the food fight, KPSP reports. It was unclear whether the campus security officers who used the spray on the students were following district policy.

Outside of OSU, hundreds of students participated in Woodfest, an event that was publicized on Facebook, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Columbus police dispersed the crowd using a prisoner-transport vehicle, which a group of officers walked behind while spraying pepper spray.

Some students participating in the event said the use of pepper spray was unnecessary. People ran from the event, some begging to be let into houses to escape the fumes.
