Student Finds Loaded Gun Left Behind by Officer

District officials say no students were in any danger during the incident.

A student is being praised after he turned over a loaded gun he found inside of a Pittsburgh high school Oct. 13.

School administrators say the gun belonged to a security officer who failed to follow procedures when he left his service weapon in a bathroom, according to pennlive.com.

The Ringgold High School student told a teacher about the weapon, who quickly notified a school resource officer.

Superintendent Karen Polkabla told parents in an open letter that “students were safe at all times” during the incident and said it showed the importance of working together to ensure the safety of every school.

“Only by working as a school community, in partnership with parents, can we create and maintain the level of safety and security that we want for our children and that they certainly deserve,” Polkabla wrote.

Ringgold High School Principal Jason Minniti says that although gun security policies were already in place for officers, additional measures have been instated to prevent a similar mistake from occurring again.

The district is not releasing additional information about the student or the security officer involved.
