After reviewing the public safety records at City College of San Francisco, The Guardsman, the college’s publication, discovered the school could be in violation of the Jeanne Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to report crimes on campus in a timely manner.
According to the review, City College has not published a regularly updated crime log since Feb. 12.
If a complaint is filed against the college for its failure to comply with the Clery Act, the institution could face a fine, depending on whether the U.S. Department of Education finds the school in violation of the law. Fines can total up to $27,500 per violation.
Currently, City College does not have a full-time police chief; however, Rod Santos, dean of public safety, has undertaken some of the responsibilities until a new chief is hired.
Presently, only one person updates the crime log. Santos and Peter Goldstein, vice chancellor of finance and administration, said they will work together to train another person keep the crime log updated.
