Student May Have Set Fire to Self, Police Say

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A 16 year-old student from Academic Magnet High School passed away today at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. The student was seen running towards the school entrance on the morning of Dec. 8, his clothes on fire. School staff doused the fire, but 70 percent of Aaron Williams’ body was covered in burns.

Police say Williams’ clothes were soaked in accelerant and that he was trying to harm himself, WBCD TV reports. The school was put on lockdown following the incident, but the lockdown was later lifted when police determined that there was no security threat to other students.

The district notified parents of the incident and subsequent lockdown through a parent-call system.
