A federal jury issued a split decision Sept. 2 in the case of a former student who sued Sewanee: the University of the South for allegedly damaging his reputation during a rape investigation.
The former student was awarded $26,500 after the jury found the university was negligent in a disciplinary hearing that took place in 2008, The Chronicle reports. The former student never faced criminal charges but was found responsible for rape by the faculty-run disciplinary panel.
The plaintiff was awarded $26,500 to cover tuition and expenses, but received no damages for his claim of injury to reputation and earning capacity.
