BAYTOWN, Texas — A Texas high school student fatally stabbed a classmate with a pair of scissors on Wednesday morning, officials say.

The incident began as a fight between two Sterling High School students during science class, Fox reports. Witnesses said the two male students knew each other and began arguing during a final exam before the situation quickly turned violent. The 18-year-old suspect reportedly grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the victim, who is a minor, in the neck.

Parent Samantha Burton told ABC that her son texted her that the student was stabbed “over and over and over.” Students were moved to the auditorium following the incident. The school was placed on a temporary hold but classes ultimately continued for the remainder of the day.

The Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District said the victim was flown to the Texas Medical Center where he later died. Baytown Fire said weather complications prevented Life Flight from landing at the school, according to Click2Houston. The student was taken by ambulance to Baytown Airport and flown from there.

Goose Creek CISD confirmed a suspect had been arrested and that it would not release the names of the students involved at this time. The district’s police department will be leading the investigation.

Normal operations resumed at the school Thursday but many parents said they plan to keep their children home due to trauma and safety concerns. Counseling services would be offered to students and staff, according to the district.

Second Stabbing at Sterling High School

Wednesday’s attack comes just over a year after a 16-year-old Sterling High School student was stabbed twice by another student during a fight. The Sept. 2024 stabbing forced the school into lockdown for two hours. The victim survived his injuries.

The suspect, 17-year-old Pablo Castaneda, was charged as an adult with aggravated assault. Prosecutors said Castaneda showed no remorse for his actions and stated that he would do it again. If convicted, he faces anywhere from two to twenty years in prison.

Two weeks after his arrest, authorities say Castaneda tried to reach for a Harris County deputy’s gun as he was led from court to a holding area.
