ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Community College–Meramec officials are under fire for how it handled an incident where a female student was attached in a campus bathroom.
Blythe Grupe, 19, was in the women’s restroom on April 18 around 8 a.m., when Jevon Mallory, 18, put her in a headlock and tried to silence her. The suspect was arrested and then released shortly after the incident, having received only a verbal warning not to return to campus. Additionally, the college did not send an alert out to the campus community about the event, STLToday.com reports.
After the victim and her family contacted local media, Mallory was re-arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault on school property. School officials acknowledged that they should have informed the campus of the incident sooner, noting that initially, police did not view the attack as serious.
