HIGHLAND, N.Y. — After an officer’s gun accidentally discharged at Highland High School Tuesday, Highland Central School District has suspended its resource officer (SRO) program.
Officer Sean McCutcheon, a veteran police officer with more than two decades of experience, accidentally fired his gun at 1:38 p.m. in the high school’s highway. No one was injured during the incident, nor was anyone nearby when the gun went off, USA Today reports.
The district implemented the SRO program following the Newtown, Conn., shooting. During the planning stages, administrators decided to hire trained security personnel with law enforcement backgrounds. Officials also agreed to allow officers to carry their side arms inside buildings.
HCSD is currently investigating the incident.
