ATLANTA, Ga. — Two wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against the University of Alabama, Huntsville by the spouses of two shooting victims who died during a faculty meeting last year. Amy Bishop, a professor who opened fire at the meeting and killed three colleagues, was viewed by the university as unstable before the incident occurred.
The spouses of Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson Sr. filed the lawsuits on Jan. 14, naming the provost, Vistasp Karbhari, and Bishop and her husband as responsible parties. The suits allege that Karbhari did not follow a policy that requires officials to inform campus police or counselors if a person is suffering from psychological instability, The New York Times reports.
The university issued a statement that claims that Karbhari could not have predicted or prevented the shooting. Officials stated that Bishop retains sole responsibility for the incident.
