South Dakota to Allow Firearms in Classrooms

PIERRE, S.D. – On Friday Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law allowing teachers to carry guns in their classrooms.

The law is believed to be the first in the United States specifically allowing teachers to carry firearms, reports the New York Times. Supporters say the bill is required for a state like South Dakota, where some schools in rural areas are far away from first responders. The state school board association and teachers association oppose the measure.
