A bill recently signed into Oklahoma law will allow some school employees to carry guns on school property.
The bill was signed May 12 by Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin. It allows school boards to select teachers or school staff to carry handguns on school property. Armed staff will be required to undergo armed security guard or reserve peace officer training, according to Yahoo!.
The new law was met with criticism by some school districts and teachers. Officials from Tulsa Public Schools say they probably won’t arm any staff members, adding that their school police department makes the measure completely unnecessary. A Tulsa school official also says the law is more useful for rural schools with no police presence nearby.
Oklahoma parents also voiced concerns about the law.
