SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Security Industry Association (SIA) has awarded Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) with the Legislator of the Year in 2013 accolade for her efforts to improve school safety.
Boxer received the honor during a special ceremony on Capitol Hill on Dec. 18. SIA recognized the senator specifically for her efforts to enact the School Safety Enhancements Act of 2013 (S. 146), which would provide vital funding to the federal Secure Our Schools grants program administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. It would also provide schools with more resources to install classroom locks, lighting, fencing and reinforced doors, as well as to help them conduct security assessments and provide security training for students and staff.
Boxer continues to raise awareness of the need for increased school security needs following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
“Senator Boxer has been a staunch advocate of increased funding for school safety, and the Security Industry Association is pleased to support her efforts,” SIA CEO Don Erickson says. “We will continue to support the senator and other legislators who advocate providing more resources to schools and enabling local officials to make the best decisions possible when adopting security strategies and technologies.”
SIA will continue to support common-sense solutions that empower local schools with increased capability and flexibility to keep their students safe and secure, according to a press release.
