ALPINE, Texas – A female student is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting a classmate at Alpine High School in west Texas on Thursday.
Law enforcement sources say the 14-year-old shooter shot another female student in a school bathroom and then took her own life. After being shot, the victim ran out of the bathroom into the street in front of the school where she was picked up by bystanders and taken to a local hospital, where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, reports MySanAntonio. The shooter and victim have not been identified yet, and the victim did not know the shooter, reports the New York Daily News.
As numerous law enforcement officers converged on the scene, a U.S. marshal accidentally shot a Homeland Security agent in the leg. The agent is in stable condition.
Previous reports that two shooters were on the loose were apparantley inaccurate, as was the report that the shooting happened in the campus band hall.
School District Superintendent Becky Watley says staff and students at the district’s three schools responded appropriately to the incident by quickly locking down the classrooms.
At about the same time, nearby Sul Ross University was also locked down, and police investigated a bomb threat made to that campus and to an Alpine hospital. The note was found on a motel door and is not believed to be credible.
Alpine High School does not have a school resource officer.
