MEMPHIS, Tenn. — All elementary schools in the Shelby County Schools district will now be provided hand-held, metal detecting wands following an incident where a gun discharged inside a kindergartner’s backpack at Westside Elementary School.
After the weapon discharged, security officers quickly took control of the 5-year-old student’s backpack. No one was hurt during the August 22 incident. Police took the boy and his mother into custody and learned that the child obtained the gun from a closet at home and placed it into his backpack, the Associated Press reports.
When the student and his mother were released, the district attorney general’s office said it would not file charges against the pair at this time. However, the child faces suspension or expulsion under Shelby County Schools policy.
