SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A state law that will take effect Jan. 1 requires convicted sex offenders to register with campus police if they enroll or work at a college or university.
Southern Illinois University (SIU) will decide over the next few months how it will make the registrations it receives available to the public, the Chicago Tribune reports. There are usually five or six registered sex offenders on the SIU campus, according to SIU Police Chief Todd Sigler.
There are approximately 25,000 sex offenders in Illinois. They are already required to register with local police where they live.
