Security Officer Acquitted of Statutory Rape Charges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Northside High School security officer was acquitted on statutory rape charges on June 24. A student at the school had testified that she and the officer had sex twice in 2009.

Mario Harris was arrested in October 2009 after the student’s aunt approached school authorities about a suspicious voicemail on the girl’s phone, The Commercial Appeal reports. The phone and a basket of chocolate-covered strawberries were gifts from Harris, according to the prosecutors.

The student, who was 17 at the time of the alleged incidents, claimed she and Harris had sex in the basement security office. However, defense attorney Ted Hansom pointed out that the office was moved to the third floor of the school in the summer of 2009, making it impossible for the incidents to have taken place in the basement office as the student claimed.
